A drabble is a short story, a very short story. One hundred words to be exact. It can be challenging to write a complete story in such few words, but it can also be exhilarating.
I accepted a challenge from my writing group last week. I kind of got caught up in all the excitement and agreed to write a drabble a day for 31 days.
The challenge is three-fold. Write a complete story within the 100-word limit. Write one every day based on a particular prompt from the group.
And third, they all have to include an element of horror. Eeekkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!! It is October after all.
The horror drabbles still need some work, but I thought I’d share a drabble I wrote as a practice run for the upcoming challenge. It is written in a poetic prose style, which means it has a lyrical rhythm to it, so suspend your imaginings and come along for the ride.
The theme of this drabble is Longing, based on the song: Somewhere Over the Rainbow, by Judy Garland.
I hope you like it.Â
Beyond the Unforgiving
The wounds of love fester, and I savor the pain wrought by my insecurity. In the depths of loneliness, I pray for forgiveness.
You appear through the looking glass, a mirror to my pain, a shadow of who you once were. I reach for you and the shards of love cut deep. Crimson is the ruby. Molten metal is the ring around my soul.Â
I wanted more than muted tones of a simple life, but now I'm trapped on the other side of the rainbow.Â
Bathed beneath a swathe of God’s palette I begin the cleansing journey of my forgiveness.
